WARM BODIES - REVIEW

Image
What if a zombie fell in love? Surely a question we've all asked ourselves at one point or another. It's also Warm Bodies ' unique concept, introducing to the world the odd notion of a rom-zom-com. A world that's way into zombie-themed things these days, what with the likes of The Walking Dead , World War Z and Zombieland doing so well and all. Despite the odd premise, Warm Bodies looked like a winner. After all, Fido had proven that zombie movies didn't always have to be depressing affairs and that familiar zombie lore could be toyed around with a little in order to make it fit into more off-beat settings and genres. This movie opens like a cross between Zombieland and Wall-E , following Nicholas Hoult's lumbering zombie who spends his days mindlessly walking around an airport grunting, eating the occasional brain and playing music in his abandoned private jet home. Several new zombie ideas are soon introduced to us: zombies can think and actually t

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH - REVIEW

Image
Based on Richard Matheson's classic novel "I Am Legend", The Last Man On Earth was an early adaptation which starred Vincent Price as a man living in a post-apocalyptic world taken over by vampires. Although the title and Price's presence may suggest an over-the-top sci-fi monster movie, this is in fact a much more serious and surprisingly well thought-out effort which still makes the recent I Am Legend movie look like crap. The vampires in this film are more like zombies with a blood problem than straight-up vampires but the main iconography is, indeed, there so you can either see it as a precursor to Night Of The Living Dead or a completely different type of vampire film. Vincent Price's character is completely isolated and lonely as he spends his days burning vampire bodies and his nights locked up at home, battling monsters who get too close. You're told in an appropriately depressing flashback that, early on, his family fell victim to the vampire &

WORLD WAR Z - REVIEW

With Zombieland bringing back zombie movies in a big way and spawning not only a TV series but zombie comedies like Warm Bodies , it was only a matter of time before we got our next big, serious zombie epic. Based on a popular novel by Max Brooks, World War Z stars Brad Pitt and boasted an epic scale in its otherwise somewhat underwhelming trailers. As it turns out, the movie failed in a very different way than I thought it would. This is the kind of movie I honestly expect to look fun in the trailers but end up being a bore,  Battle L.A. and Total Recall being prime examples of that. There are many things wrong with this movie but I can't really say I was bored by it as it kept the action going throughout and rarely wasted too much time with unimportant filler. It does slow down quite a bit near the end, though, but even those parts had some form of suspense to them. The film's first half hour really is its biggest turn off. In 3D (avoid the 3D at all costs, by the way
