DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD - REVIEW

Image
David Brent, Ricky Gervais' entertainingly pathetic creation from cult series The Office , finally gets his own spin-off movie as the boss-turned-sales rep attempts to make his rock star dreams come true on a misguided UK tour. David Brent: Life On The Road first introduces us to Brent's new life as a sales rep for a bathroom supply firm and, this time, his co-workers aren't all that willing to politely play along with his ebullient cluelessness even if a couple of them do genuinely like him. The film is shot in the same mockumentary style as The Office with Brent and his bandmates talking to the camera throughout their journey. The tour is obviously a disaster from the get-go as the band members are instantly put off by Brent's blatant desperation, awful songwriting and bad sense of humour. The gigs are one catastrophe after another between Brent's naively offensive songs, no-one coming to see the band play and countless mishaps. Fans of awkward humour should

JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA - REVIEW

Image
Having never been much of a Jackass fan when the show was on or when the movies were first released, I wasn't even aware that Johnny Knoxville played characters like Irving, the lead in this year's spin-off Bad Grandpa . Having enjoyed Sacha Baron Cohen's recent-ish documentary-style antics ( Borat , Bruno ), a bunch of stuff by Tom Green, French joker Francois Damiens and hidden camera shows like Trigger Happy TV , I went into Bad Grandpa expecting pretty much what the trailer promised: light-hearted, dumb, awkward lols and the occasional silly stunt. What I got was basically that but tied together by a "storyline" and packed full of hit-and-miss jokes. Bad taste is, of course, the type of humour the film is going for and when it sticks to that it does rather well. It's juvenile as hell and you'll feel a bit bad for laughing here and there but whatever, that's Bad Grandpa. The core idea of the film, a horny, dirty old man going around the countr

THE WOLVERINE - REVIEW

Image
A new trend is born. Reboots of unpopular comic-book movies are treated as superior when really they're just as bad or as flawed as the films they're rebooting. Was The Amazing Spider-Man really miles better than Spider-Man ? Nope. Is The Wolverine really that much more watchable than X-Men Origins: Wolverine ? I know you're saying "yes" right now but... come on. The difference in quality is negligible. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an unpopular Marvel outing. Why? With the exception of Hugh Jackman's ever reliable Wolverine, it got almost every secondary character wrong and went for mindless action rather than dark, raw, gritty yet heartfelt edge. Which is exactly what Darren Aronofsky's The Wolverine promised! So for a studio-friendly, 12A-rated film like THIS to come along and feel just as flawed as that other Wolvie pic did and, in fact, fail to bring anything new and different to the table, I gotta say, that's quite a slap in the f
