BULWORTH - REVIEW

Image
In 1998, Warren Beatty directed and starred in Bulworth , a political satire about a Senator who snaps and starts telling (or "rapping") the truth to people. A lack of sleep somehow leads him to South Central where he is taken in by Halle Berry's young activist Nina after a wild night out clubbing. Through Senator Bulworth's out-of-control antics, Warren Beatty clearly tries to make a point about how neither Democrats or Republicans are honest to the people who elect them. As Bulworth's erratic behaviour shocks the media and the people in his inner circle, his popularity rises leaving his assistants confused and struggling to keep up with the changing tide. It's an interesting film to revisit especially after last year's US election as it brings up some interesting points still relevant today. The way in which those points are brought forward in the movie is messy, however, as we get to see Warren Beatty turn into the worst rapper in the world and emb

IN GOD WE TRU$T - REVIEW

Image
A year after the release of Monty Python's groundbreaking religious spoof Life Of Brian , we got Marty Feldman comedy In God We Tru$t , another satire this time focusing on the money-grubbing aspects of those pretending to speak on the Church's behalf. The film's plot is very Blues Brothers in spirit as innocent monk Ambrose (Feldman) is sent out of the monastery for the very first time with the respectable mission of bringing back $5000 to save the place. At the same time, Brother Ambrose encounters his share of charlatans working in the name of God including a church truck-driving drunk (Peter Boyle) and a diabolical televangelist played by a show-stealing Andy Kaufman. Ambrose also meets his first love-interest, a friendly prostitute played by Louise Lasser. There's a lot going on in this movie and yet you never feel it knows where it's going. Unlike Life Of Brian which was so clever in its writing that taking away one scene from it would be, well, blasphem

THE INTERVIEW - REVIEW

Image
Alright... What was all that fuss about, then? The Interview certainly made an impact lately, to say the least. For a moment there, it looked like this Seth Rogen comedy was going to start WWIII! Who would have thought that a film designed to royally piss off North Korea would end up royally pissing off North Korea?! Indeed The Interview's basic premise, two idiots being hired by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong Un, clearly wasn't aiming for subtle political satire. I mean, if it was, talk about a major misstep! The film sees James Franco play Dave Skylark, the cheesy TV host of a trashy talk show, being invited by the Supreme Leader to interview him. Skylark and his producer Aaron (Seth Rogen) are soon hired by the CIA for a mission involving the killing of Un during the interview. Why the U.S. government would want two well-known morons to take on such a dangerous mission is unclear but I guess suspension of disbelief and all that. I mean, up to that point

AMERICAN PSYCHO - REVIEW

Image
Adapting Bret Easton Ellis' chilling novel was always going to be a challenge yet director Mary Harron did really well to find a unique, stylish angle on it. While nowhere near as gruesome as the book, the film's classier, more implied approach works perfectly well, keeping it firmly in the horror genre but also making sure to make the satire of 80's excess and vanity as biting as possible. Christian Bale plays wealthy New York banking executive Patrick Bateman in his most substantial stand-out role pre-Batman. To date, this is quite probably his most striking performance even if, on a purely physical level, his dedication to his roles in The Fighter and The Machinist are particularly memorable. In American Psycho , he gives us an all-around full-on portrayal of a serial killer complete with creepy monologues, conflicting morals, bat-shit insane breakdowns and a meticulous approach to his looks and how he is perceived by his peers. Instead of putting us directly deep
