IT - REVIEW

Image
A convenient 27 years after the memorable miniseries, we are finally treated to a movie adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel IT with Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd taking on the role of creepy killer clown Pennywise made iconic by Tim Curry back in the day. The film focuses on the child characters, a group of seven friends who are each terrorised by random sightings of Pennywise years after the latter abducted a child called Georgie by luring him into the sewers. Georgie's older brother Bill (Jaeden Lieberher) has been trying to find him ever since and this becomes his and his friends' main goal. Unfortunately, particularly dangerous bullies, crappy lives at home and specific fears brought up by Pennywise get in the way of their mission. Like an ingenuous mix of Stand By Me and The Goonies with some  Stranger Things thrown in, IT is both an effective coming-of-age story with a group of very different but equally likeable kids at its heart and a supernatural horror film every

THE BATFLECK RISES - NEW PICTURE

Ooh, a bandwagon! *jumps on* Here's a new picture of Ben Affleck as Batman as he will be in Zack Snyder's pre- Justice League cream-a-thon Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice . Those ears still make him look more like Catman but it's admittedly a cool pic.

GRAVITY - REVIEW

Image
If there's one thing we've really learned, since the resurfacing of 3D, it's that cramming a movie with CGI, no matter how good, does not make a great film. Avatar got away with it at the box-office, so did Alice In Wonderland (though the critics panned it) and John Carter simply didn't. So here comes another over-hyped example. It's called Gravity . Now, critics love this movie: it's Oscar-bait at its purest. Gravity is a concept movie with two main leads: George Clooney, who is going for the quirky and loveable Best Supporting Actor nomination and Sandra Bullock, who is going for the big prize. No plot, no brains, no point but boy is it trying. I'll give the film that: it looks pretty good. You're clearly looking at buckets of CGI with tons of stuff flying at you to cater for the 3D aspect but the effects are solid enough to make you suspend your disbelief. Bullock's character is the rookie who somehow got a job in space despite her ner

ENDER'S GAME - REVIEW

Image
Based on the popular novel comes Ender's Game , your typical boy-meets-girl, boy-becomes-army-commander-against-a-race-of-ant-aliens-in-space story. It certainly took a while for this one to get made but I guess with the success of The Hunger Games , it was only a matter of time before they actually gave it a go. That Ender's Game is a 12A is both surprising and not all that surprising since, although the source material has its brutal moments, studios need to sell it to kids as well as adults so they were never going to bump it up to a 15 or more. Not that the film is devoid of any dark stuff but it's much more implied than it is in-your-face. The young actors are also older than in the book, I understand, thereby making their cruel environment not quite as scary. If you don't know, the film is set 50 years after a war between humans and Formics (alien ant things) and sees a young boy called Ender (Asa Butterfield) get recruited by Harrison Ford's Colonel Graf

ELYSIUM - REVIEW

Image
From Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9 , comes Elysium . Expect lots of dirt, a poor-vs-rich plot and Sharlto Copley acting nuts. I wasn't expecting much from this Matt Damon-starring, generic-looking sci-fi action flick. The trailers promised nothing too new or particularly fascinating and it just seemed like District 9 all over again. The film itself was much better than I expected. Elysium really does stand up on its own and, in fact, surpasses District 9 in many ways. For one thing, its metaphor is a little more subtle than it was in that other movie and also you've got some characters to actually care about this time! Matt Damon turns out to be the perfect choice for the role of a normal guy given a death sentence who becomes desperate to make his way to Elysium, a space station packed full of high-end medical equipment for the super rich that live there worry-free. Damon makes a likeable and convincing everyman while still pulling off the action sequences
