NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - REVIEW

Image
Back in 2007, The Coen Brothers swept the Oscars with No Country For Old Men , the bleak tale of a man who finds a briefcase full of money only to then be hunted by a madman. Based on Cormac McCarthy's novel, this was a return to darker territory for the Coens after a couple of more light-hearted efforts. An exploration of young and old, good and evil, right and wrong, No Country For Old Men was maybe Ethan and Joel Coen's most serious and dense film since Miller's Crossing . It stood out mostly thanks to a chilling performance by Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh, the psychopath with twisted morals who toys with innocents and kills people with an oxygen tank. Tommy Lee Jones' Texas Sheriff Ed is our good guy who desperately tries to make sense of this new unpredictable brand of evil that has landed on his doorstep and Josh Brolin's everyman Llewelyn is the one in the middle of it all who meant well but doomed himself and others by taking something that didn't

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR - REVIEW

Image
Turn a corner in Sin City ... Wait about 10 years... Then turn another. Too little too late? The box-office seems to think so. But what of the film itself? Was Robert Rodriguez's sequel to his own Sin City , arguably one of the best comic book movie adaptations of all time, worth the long wait? This time, the film is mostly based on the Sin City stories "A Dame To Kill For" and "Just Another Saturday Night", though the latter is used more as an amusing prologue than anything else. The other two stories were put together by Frank Miller for the film specifically. One of them involves Joseph Gordon Levitt's gambler and the other continues Nancy's (Jessica Alba) story from the first movie. The problem with making a sequel this late is that you'll only be able to gather about a third of the cast from the original at best. And with the sad losses of Brittany Murphy and Michael Clarke Duncan a few years ago, this was never going to be easy. Es

HOLLOW MAN - REVIEW

Image
Kevin Bacon is the invisible man in a film directed by Paul Verhoeven where Bacon loses it and starts using his newfound power in creepy, disturbing, criminal ways. Why wouldn't you like this movie?! I mean, ok, so as an effects-led flick, Hollow Man was always going to risk looking dated really quickly and, admittedly, whenever we see invisible Bacon surrounded by smoke or water, it looks a little too clean CGI-wise. That said, most of the effects are still pretty cool and do the job so, 14 years on, the film still stands up surprisingly well. After all, Paul Verhoeven has made a career our of movies which really shouldn't work and yet work completely, often becoming instant cult classics. Arnie on Mars? Space bug wars? Robot cops? Really boring Michael Douglas movies? The man can make anything work. Even Showgirls ! Can't deny how hilarious that movie is. Hollow Man takes H.G. Wells' classic invisible man, leaving behind John Carpenter's more light-hearte
