DOCTOR STRANGE - REVIEW

Image
After stealing the Summer earlier this year with Captain America: Civil War, Marvel are back with a somewhat more experimental project as another classic character's origin story is crossed off the list. Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of Doctor Strange , the Master of the Mystic Arts. This was always going to be a challenge for Marvel as adding what is essentially a wizard to a vast superhero universe could go either way. Fans might call it jumping the shark, liken it to Harry Potter and dismiss it entirely. But for comic-book readers, Doctor Strange is a pretty important character who has always been closely linked to most of the heroes we've come to know and love in the movies so introducing him to the Avengers ' universe was a no-brainer and an exciting prospect. Dr. Stephen Strange is portrayed as a charming, very talented and extremely intelligent neurosurgeon whose vanity and arrogance almost kills him. After a devastating car crash, Strange's hands

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG - REVIEW

Another year, another Peter Jackson epic about little people walking towards pointy mountains. What is this? 2002? After the decent yet slightly underwhelming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , it was time to kick things up a notch. At least entertainment-wise because one involving action scene in a three-hour-long movie isn't going to cut it. Not again, anyway. The film, happily, doesn't disappoint. This time around, Bilbo and his dwarf buddies not only face a marijuana-injected forest peopled with big-ass spiders but also an unfriendly bunch of elves, orcs aplenty, some Manimal -style bear dude, Stephen Fry and, of course, good old Benedict Smaug-berbatch. Similarly to how The Fellowship Of The Ring ended, key players in the main story are now

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS - REVIEW

Image
(SPOILER-FREE REVIEW) "I. Am. Better." "At what?" "Everything." That's the conversation Benedict Cumberbatch's villain has with Chris Pine's Kirk in the trailers for this new J.J. Abrams Trek outing Star Trek: Into Darkness . And, you know what? This movie could have easily had the exact same conversation with the first Star Trek reboot. Yes, it is, indeed, better. At everything. As the title suggests, Into Darkness is darker (duh!) but it's also bigger and more fun. Which is not to say it's perfect, no Star Trek movie is, but it sets out to be a superior sequel and achieves just that. This time around, more emphasis is placed on the film's villain and, considering how forgettable Eric Bana's bitter future Romulan was in the first movie, this is certainly a good move. Especially since Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrisson is such a good villain, the Sherlock actor stealing the show in almost every scene he&#
